Garda Vetting process

CoderDojo is taking steps to safeguard children. We have a Safeguarding Policy, which applies to all trustees, champions, volunteers and mentors.

Purpose:
* To protect children, young people, and vulnerable adults who take part in CoderDojo activities.
* To provide volunteers with the overarching principles that guide our approach to safeguarding and child protection.

We believe that a child, young person, or vulnerable adult should never experience abuse of any kind. We have a responsibility to promote the welfare of all children, young people, and vulnerable adults, and to keep them safe. We are committed to following practices that protect them.

See this short online Safeguarding course to learn about best practices in child safeguarding.

A key part of this policy is the selection and vetting of Mentors and Volunteers. All prospective Mentors will be subjected to the Garda Vetting process. Even if you have been vetted elsewhere, you MUST ALSO BE vetted specifically for the Coder Dojo in order to volunteer.

Garda Vetting (GV) process

In Ireland it is a legal requirement that all regular volunteers at the Dojo are vetted via the Garda e-vetting process. The CoderDojo Foundation processes the Garda Vetting applications centrally for official Dojos.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you complete this process as soon as possible. The process is pretty simple and totally self-service. Please follow the steps explained in this page: https://coderdojo.com/en/gardavetting . It's essentially as follows:

1. Download and print the Garda Vetting Invitation NVB1 Form available in this link. You need to sign it by hand.

When filling in the form, make sure you enter the following details (or the application may be rejected or delayed):
  • Role Being Vetted For: “CoderDojo Technical Mentor” or  “CoderDojo Non-Technical Mentor” as appropriate
  • Name of OrganisationCoderDojo Bray
  • Dojo Champion Name: Stephen Dixon.
  • Dojo Champion Email: bray@coderdojo.com
2. Scan the form, your ID and a recent utility bill

3. Upload the form, ID and utility bill via this page: https://coderdojo.com/en/gardavetting

Please do NOT email your documents directly to the Dojo, but please do let us know via bray@coderdojo.com that you submitted it, in case of delays or problems with the application.

The process is described in detail here.

Information about Coronavirus (COVID-19)

[UPDATE 12 March 2020] CoderDojo is closed for the season.  See this page for details --- Originally posted on: 29 February 2020 As you know, CoderDojo Bray takes place in Presentation College.  You may have read in the papers or in social media that some students from Presentation College Bray have been recently on a sky trip to an area in Italy which has subsequently been included in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) affected area (the whole province of Lombardy is now being outlined as a precaution as part of the protocol). IoT students visit to Killruddery House

This post has been written by the CoderDojo students A few weeks ago, the CoderDojo Bray IoT group went to  Killruddery House  to check the network and security cameras. There were 4 kids (Megan, Tyler, Joshua and me, Marcos) and two mentors (Kevin & Tatjana). At Killruddery we first went to Anthony's office to check the power source; everything was powered by Linux. Anthony had built the source code himself. After we checked all that, we went up to the roof, it was fun! On the way up, we climbed three flights of stairs and through a dusty attic. Going to Killruddery was a great experience! My name is Joshua. I thought the visit to Kilruddery was fun, cool and kind of interesting. We started off looking at the pigs. They loved being scratched behind the ear. Then we went through a huge door and into this room that had a map on the wall, in fact there were maps on every wall in the house. We made our way into his office where he showed us about this computer (it was hu...
